The story

From the pool to the mat.

Rio de Janeiro, Florida State, and a gym on Bay Plaza Boulevard.

Alan established Caridian Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2020, after being laid off during Covid. He decided it was finally time to leave the corporate world to follow his dream: sharing jiu-jitsu with as many people as possible.

A lifelong athlete, Alan was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began competitive swimming at eight, and at fourteen was recruited to train in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He moved to the U.S. to pursue his swimming career — a big leap of faith at fourteen years old. As a teenager, his love of coaching developed while working as a camp counselor at South Florida swim camps.

That move paid off. Alan was awarded a swimming scholarship at Florida State University. After completing his undergraduate degrees and a four-year collegiate swimming career, he became an assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams while pursuing his MBA — helping coach both teams to Atlantic Coast Conference Championship titles.

He began training jiu-jitsu during that time, but didn't commit fully until he met his professor, Fabio Novaes, in Lakeland, FL in 2010. He has taught under Fabio since 2016.

In his personal time, Alan is a husband, a father to two sons, an avid soccer fan, and a grilling machine.
